No-Gi BJJ in Phoenix is the smartest martial art you can start — and your first class at TNT BJJ might surprise you. We know that. You’re walking into a room full of people who already know things you don’t, wearing clothes you’re unsure about, about to do something that involves being very close to strangers on the floor. It’s a lot.
So let us demystify it. Here’s exactly what your first No-Gi BJJ class at TNT BJJ in Phoenix looks like — from the moment you walk in to the moment you leave.
What to Wear
No-Gi means no uniform to buy. For your first class, wear athletic shorts (nothing with belt loops or pockets — those catch fingers) and a fitted t-shirt or rash guard. That’s it. You’ll train barefoot, so no shoes on the mat. If you have a rash guard, great. If not, a regular athletic shirt works fine while you’re getting started.
The Warm-Up
Classes typically start with a warm-up that doubles as movement drilling — shrimping (a BJJ-specific hip escape movement), forward and backward rolls, and basic athletic work. This isn’t just about getting the heart rate up. These movements are foundational to everything you’ll learn, so you’re already practicing technique from minute one.
Technique Instruction
After the warm-up, the instructor demonstrates a technique — or a series of related techniques. At TNT BJJ, all of our instructors hold a purple belt or higher and have years of real training experience. You’ll watch the technique broken down step by step, then drill it with a partner at a controlled pace.
New students aren’t thrown to the wolves. You’ll be paired with someone who can guide you through the movement without making you feel lost. This is a collaborative environment, not a competitive one.
Live Rolling (Sparring)
Toward the end of class, students spar — what we call “rolling.” For your very first class, you may watch, or you may be invited to roll at a light pace with a more experienced partner. Nobody is going to crank on your arm on day one. The goal is for you to get a feel for the movement, the pace, and the problem-solving nature of jiu-jitsu.
You will be uncomfortable. That’s normal. You won’t know what to do most of the time. That’s also normal. Every single person on that mat had the same first roll. The difference between those who get good and those who quit is simple: they came back.
The Culture at TNT BJJ
Our gym is overseen by Professor Scott Tannenbaum — a 6th degree black belt under Rigan Machado, former fighter, and someone who has spent over 40 years in martial arts. The tone he sets is one of mutual respect, hard work, and zero ego. Students at TNT BJJ are here to get better and to help each other get better. That culture starts at the top and it shows on the mat.
We’re a No-Gi gym focused on real, practical jiu-jitsu. Not sport competition. Not trophies. Skills that actually work.

Striking Defense and Takedowns
Depending on where you are in the curriculum, classes may also cover striking defense, takedowns, and clinch work — not just ground techniques. You’ll learn to parry punches and close the distance properly, which is how most real grappling situations actually begin. This is part of what makes our program more complete than a typical BJJ class. We train the full picture, not just what happens after you’re already on the mat.
The hardest part is walking through the door the first time. Everything after that gets easier. If you’re in Phoenix and ready to try No-Gi BJJ, here’s everything you need to know about our classes. Come as you are. We’ll take it from there.
