How to Choose the Right MMA Gym in Phoenix (Without Wasting Time or Money)

April 17, 2026

Phoenix has dozens of MMA gyms. Some are great. Some are glorified fitness classes with punching bags. And a few are the kind of places where untrained coaches let beginners spar on day one. Choosing the wrong gym wastes your time, your money, and — worst case — gets you hurt.

Here’s how to evaluate an MMA gym in Phoenix before you sign anything, and what separates a serious training facility from the rest.

Check the Instructor Credentials

This is the single most important factor and the one most people skip. A gym is only as good as its coaches. Before you sign up, find out:

Who teaches the classes? Not who owns the gym — who’s actually on the mat instructing? A gym might advertise a famous name but have assistant coaches running every session. At TNT MMA Training Center, Professor Scott Tannenbaum — a 6th degree No-Gi BJJ black belt with 40+ years of experience — teaches classes directly. That’s not common, and it matters.

What’s their lineage? In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu especially, lineage tells you where the knowledge came from. Professor Scott was promoted directly by Red Belt Rigan Machado, whose lineage traces to the Gracie family. That’s a direct line to the source of the art.

Visit Before You Commit

Any legitimate gym will let you watch a class or try a free session before asking for money. If a gym pressures you to sign a contract before you’ve trained there, that’s a red flag.

When you visit, look for:

Clean, well-maintained facilities. Mats should be clean (this prevents staph and ringworm — a real concern in grappling). Equipment should be in good condition. The space shouldn’t smell like it hasn’t been cleaned since 2015.

Structured classes. Good gyms follow a curriculum. There’s a warm-up, technique instruction, drilling, and sparring — in that order. If a class looks like a bunch of people just rolling around with no direction, keep looking.

Respectful culture. Watch how upper belts treat beginners. Listen to how the coach addresses students. A gym with a toxic ego culture will burn you out fast, or worse, get you injured by someone who thinks training is a fight.

Understand What You’re Paying For

MMA gym memberships in Phoenix typically range from $100 to $250 per month depending on the facility, schedule, and what’s included. Here’s what to watch for:

Hidden fees. Some gyms charge registration fees, testing fees, belt promotion fees, or require you to buy branded gear. Ask about all costs upfront.

Contract length. Month-to-month is ideal. Long-term contracts (12+ months) benefit the gym, not you. A gym confident in its quality doesn’t need to lock you in.

What’s included. Can you attend unlimited classes, or are you limited to a certain number per week? Are all disciplines (BJJ, striking, MMA) included, or is each one a separate membership?

Consider the Disciplines Offered

A well-rounded MMA gym should offer training in multiple martial arts. At minimum, look for:

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu — the foundation of ground fighting. At TNT, we teach No-Gi BJJ exclusively because it translates directly to real-world situations and MMA competition.

Striking (Muay Thai or Boxing) — stand-up fighting skills including punches, kicks, knees, and elbows. Muay Thai is the gold standard for MMA striking.

MMA-specific training — classes that integrate grappling and striking, teach transitions between standing and ground fighting, and prepare you for the full spectrum of combat.

Location and Schedule Matter

The best gym in the world doesn’t help if it’s 45 minutes away or only offers classes when you’re at work. Be realistic about your commute and schedule.

TNT MMA Training Center is located in North Phoenix, easily accessible from Scottsdale, Cave Creek, Carefree, and Paradise Valley. We offer classes six days a week across morning, afternoon, and evening time slots — because we know our students have jobs, families, and lives outside the gym.

Try Before You Buy

The only way to know if a gym is right for you is to train there. Reading reviews helps, but nothing replaces stepping on the mat and feeling the energy of a class firsthand.

TNT MMA Training Center offers a free first class — no strings attached. Come in, train with us, meet the coaches and students, and see if it’s the right fit.
