Is No-Gi BJJ Good for Self-Defense? What 40 Years of Real Experience Taught Us

March 25, 2026

No-Gi BJJ for Self-Defense is the most practical martial art you can train in Phoenix. Most people think about self-defense, they picture striking — punches, kicks, a quick knee to the ribs. What they rarely picture is the ground. But here’s the truth most people find out the hard way: most real fights end up on the ground, and if you don’t know what to do there, you’re in serious trouble.

At TNT BJJ in Phoenix, we’ve spent over 40 years answering the question people ask us most: Is No-Gi BJJ for Self-Defense actually the right choice? The short answer is yes — and we’d argue it’s one of the most practical martial arts you can train for real-world situations.

Why No-Gi Specifically?

Here’s what most people don’t think about: in a real confrontation, nobody is wearing a gi. There’s no collar to grab, no lapel to use for a choke. If your entire game relies on gi grips, you’ve got a serious problem the moment someone in a t-shirt grabs you outside a bar or in a parking lot.

No-Gi BJJ trains you to control, submit, and escape without relying on fabric. You learn to use your body — underhooks, overhooks, body locks, head position — the way a real fight actually plays out. That’s why we made the decision years ago to train No-Gi exclusively at TNT BJJ.

The Ground Is Where Fights Are Won and Lost

Studies on real-world altercations consistently show that the majority of fights go to the ground within seconds. Once there, size and strength matter a lot less than technique. A well-drilled rear naked choke or a clean armbar doesn’t care how big or strong the other person is.

This is the core reason Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was developed — and why Rigan Machado, the 8th degree coral belt who certifies our lineage, has spent his career proving that technique beats size every time. Our head instructor, Professor Scott Tannenbaum, trained directly under Rigan and holds a 6th degree black belt — one of the rarest ranks in all of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, held by fewer than a handful of practitioners in the entire state of Arizona.

What We Don’t Teach — And Why That Matters

A lot of gyms teach sport BJJ — pulling guard for points, 50/50 leg locks designed for competition, berimbolo sweeps that work great in a tournament and nowhere else. We don’t train that way. Sport jiu-jitsu and street jiu-jitsu are two different animals.

At TNT BJJ, everything we teach has a direct application. If it doesn’t work when someone is swinging at your head, we don’t spend time on it. That philosophy comes directly from Scott’s background as a fighter with over four decades in martial arts — and it’s what makes our program genuinely different from most gyms in the Valley.

Practical Self-Defense Starts With a Strong Foundation

You don’t need to be an athlete to start. You don’t need any prior experience. What you need is consistency and good instruction — and that’s exactly what we deliver. Every one of our instructors holds a purple belt or higher and has years of real mat time. This isn’t a gym where a two-stripe blue belt teaches your fundamentals class.

If you’re in Phoenix and you’re serious about being able to defend yourself and your family, there’s no more honest or effective path than No-Gi BJJ done right.

We Don’t Just Train on the Ground

A lot of BJJ gyms teach you to pull guard and work from your back. That’s fine for sport. For self-defense, it’s incomplete. Real fights start standing up — and they start with punches.

At TNT BJJ, our curriculum includes striking defense, takedowns, and clinch work. You’ll learn how to parry punches, close the distance safely, and take someone down without eating a fist on the way in. The clinch — that tight, chest-to-chest position — is where strikes become almost impossible to land and where your grappling skills take over. We teach you exactly how to get there.

This is what a complete self-defense curriculum looks like. Not just ground work. Not just submissions. The full picture, from the moment a confrontation starts to the moment it ends.
